One of Hollywood’s top actresses says her Oscar preparation includes something familiar to millions of Americans – going to church.

Oscar winner Nicole Kidman said as much over the weekend in an interview with Variety, which asked the acclaimed actress how she prepares for one of the year’s most-watched shows. Although she was not nominated for an Oscar this year, Kidman was tapped to present. The ceremony aired Sunday night.

“This is crazy, but I will go to church in the morning,” she told Variety at the pre-Oscars dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel. “We’ll be squeezing it in. … It just centers me. It’s what I do on a Sunday.”

Kidman won the 2003 Oscar for Best Actress (The Hours) and has earned four additional nominations. Although much of her filmography has been geared toward adult audiences, she has also appeared in several projects for families, including Paddington, Happy Feet, Aquaman, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Kidman’s church routine is common in the U.S.: Exactly three in 10 Americans say they attend religious services weekly or nearly weekly, while another 11 percent say they attend about every month, according to a 2024 Gallup survey. Only one-third of Americans say they never go to church.

Kidman has also spoken openly in past interviews about her faith and upbringing.

“I’m spiritual in that I absolutely believe in God,” she told Allure in 2018. “I loved the idea of being a nun. Obviously, I did not choose to go that path, but I was very drawn to it.”

In a 2019 interview with Variety, Kidman said her grounding in the faith as a child has remained an important influence in her life.

“A lot of my friends tease me,” she said in 2019 about her strong belief in God.

“That’s how we are raising our children,” she said then, referencing her marriage at the time to singer Keith Urban. “Keith has his own beliefs, but he comes, too. I had a very Catholic grandmother, and I was raised praying, so that had massive impact. I wouldn’t say it’s absolutism, there’s constant questioning – I’m a willful, feisty girl. For me, it’s very important that I don’t have judgment. My dad would always say, ‘Tolerance is the most important thing.’”
