A long time ago, apparently outside the memory of most reporters. the otherwise failed administration of Jimmy Carter scored its one most memorable and worthy accomplishment – The Camp David Accords. Carter brokered a peace deal between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin – a deal that has held until today. I recall a sense of disbelief that Carter could do anything right. I recall a hesitation to admit his success, fearing that somewhere in there was a mistake that would jump up and bite us. I am sure a lot of other people had their doubts as well. But everyone kept those doubts to themselves and bided their time, willing to let Carter succeed if he had in fact succeeded. If only that were the case these days.. . .
Bob Knight is one of the greatest basketball coaches in history. Who? I am sure is asked by many. Of course most great basketball coaches like Adolph Rupp, John Wooden, Dean Smith have faded into historical footnotes – but Coach Knight, equally on a par with any of them, is more than likely a footnote on their footnote. Despite one of the best records in college basketball history he was fired in disgrace by Indiana University after 29 years for, frankly, being the same guy he was when they hired him. He was irascible, and demanded much of his players. He was a strict disciplinarian – and somewhere over the 29 years he was at IU, such traits went from laudable to disgraceful, hence his dismissal.. . .
My wife and I are headed back to California in a few weeks to look in on friends and loved ones for a few days. As much as we love and care for those we will visit, the trip still remains troublesome to contemplate. Now, finally, I have a way to explain it in a nutshell. It was big news yesterday.. . .
I had intended to write about the 10/7 anniversary this morning, but the host has done such a thorough and masterful job that there is nothing left to say. Here is the key sentence, “That Israel has conquered all its enemies, on all seven fronts, should not dull the sense of shock about what happened two years ago.” Read it all. Consequently, I’ll turn my attention elsewhere.. . .
It is not just about anti-social individual violence – we have a real problem with people generally. Riots after sports championships have grown commonplace. What we once considered a “soccer hooligan” problem just in Europe has come to the United States in force – especially after the NBA decides its champion. There are more examples from the weekend just ended.. . .
Big story yesterday when ten cars of thugs surrounded a vehicle carrying federal law enforcement officials and gunfire ensued. This was a seditious act. But that is not what bothers me. What bothers me is let’s assume the actors were convinced the officers were gestapo hunting Jews. The fact that they were not gestapo is proven by the fact that they walked away. The actual gestapo would have hosed them down with large caliber machine guns and left them dead in the streets. And given that, would not the better act of rebellion be to, ala Anne Frank, hide the people being hunted? No this was not merely seditious, this was an act designed and intended to execute violence of government officials. This fact belies any claims to this being a legitimate rebellious act taken in the defiance of government injustice.. . .
Some days. Read this, “I Spent 491 Days as a Hostage of Hamas. This Is My Story.” Now contrast it with this, “Sarah Mullally named as new Archbishop of Canterbury.” The later, published not long after the killings in Manchester makes passing reference to them, but then focuses on this person being the first Archbishop of Canterbury. And so we see a church lost. Confronted with direct, evident evil, the church focuses on far more trivial matters.. . .
