Musical covers are a time-honored tradition and practice that has likely existed since music first became a thing. There are entire bands dedicated solely to playing the music of one specific band or artist. You have likely never heard the song performed this way, and it’s fantastic.

Music is an emotional and spiritual encounter. We can praise Jesus as we experience this work of art. He is glorified in the skills of this young man, and we are blessed to hear it and enter the melody with him.

Whether you are familiar with this song or not, whether you have heard it a million times or this is the first, it will not disappoint. The crescendos and decrescendos have been so masterfully performed that you will feel this song deeply. 

When we rest and imagine alongside the music, it can cause us to reflect on life, seasons, time, nature, and so many other possibilities. Playing an Aerosmith, an Elton John or a Fleetwood Mac deep track that most people, unless you’re a massive fan of those bands, do not know simply will not work. Regarding covers, it’s always best to stick to the hits.

There are several choices when it comes to covering the work of Electric Light Orchestra. There is “Evil Woman,” “Livin’ Thing,” “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” and “Don’t Bring Me Down.” However, the one that likely immediately comes to most people’s minds when considering ELO is “Mr. Blue Sky.” I know that’s the song I most closely associate with them.

You can tell he really enjoys being up on stage performing for people. He even shared that since his first show when he was 7 years old, he knew that he wanted to play and perform rock and roll for the rest of his life.

In addition to the standing ovation from the audience, Bay received high praise from people online who watched his AGT performance.

“So awesome! When he slid across the stage on to his knees and was smiling at the crowd, I swear, I saw a flash of Eddie Van Halen there. Best wishes young man,” comments one person on YouTube after watching the video.

Even those who aren't disco fans will have to agree that those are some absolute classics.

While some may not appreciate or even enjoy musicians playing the songs of others, I've got some bad news for those individuals. Covers are here to stay, and there is likely nothing that can be done about it. That's a practice that is likely as old as music itself, so to think that anything would be changing in the immediate future on that front would be incredibly incorrect.

It's understandable why some people may not like covers. They are not all created equally. Some musicians should not touch some tunes, especially if all they are going to do is ruin them. No one wants that. But when covers are done right, they are super enjoyable, and on very rare occasions, even better than the original.

I'm not saying their version is better than the original from the 1970s, but theirs is still pretty darn good. Like every other song they cover, this performance is an absolute joy, and they will have you singing right along. How could you not sing along to those memorable, iconic lyrics?

As the YouTuber plays each key to the classic beat, he displays tutorial-like imagery, and each key lights up when he presses it. As fish and sea turtles swim in the ocean-filled background (a very fitting theme, don’t you think?), dashes of light precede each key before he presses it so that viewers can follow along.

“Beyond the Sea” is the English version of the French song “La Mer,” which was written by Charles Trenet in 1945. The original song was more about the sea, but Jack Lawrence, who wrote the English lyrics, turned it into more of a love song. 

It was featured in the Cary Grant movie, “Every Girl Should Be Married,” in 1955. It was also used in the closing credits of Pixar’s 2003 “Finding Nemo” movie and its sequel, “Finding Dory.” Bobby Darin made the song popular in 1959 when his version went to No. 6 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Bobby died in 1973 at the age of 37. His friend, producer Nick Venet, said Bobby “would whistle ‘Beyond The Sea’ on the beach and I'd walk, oh, a quarter of a mile behind him because he'd want me to see how the sound sounded when the wind brought it back. He was still planning on recording a new version of ‘Beyond The Sea’ at Pfeiffer Beach” before he died.

Otis wrote the song in June of 1967 from pure experience when he rented a houseboat in Sausalito. It was a peaceful and relaxing time with his manager, “Speedo” Sims. He just rocked on the boat and played his guitar. 

“We must have been out there three or four days before I could get any concept as to where he was going with the song,” said Speedo. “I just didn’t understand it. And lyrically, it sounded weird. He was changing with the times. And I was looking at the times change.”

After five months, Otis brought the song to Sax studios. He finished the song, adding a bridge with guitarist Steve Cropper. They had it done in just 30 minutes. 

“When I wrote with Otis, I always tried to make the lyric about him and his life,” Cropper said. “Songs like ‘Mr. Pitiful,’ ‘Sad Song’—those are all about him. ‘Dock of the Bay’ was, too. Otis trusted me. I always seemed to do the things he liked.”

And now, decades later, Montechair brings Otis’ peaceful and soulful spirit to life—one key at a time.

For a cover to work, people have to be familiar with the original version, and that is even more so when the lyrics are entirely removed from the cover, which is why only true classics will ever get an instrumental cover.

You're simply unable to take your eyes off the screen as the hands dance back and forth along the keys. Yes, the musician's sound is spot-on and thoroughly enjoyable. Still, your eyes are immediately drawn to the graphics falling toward the keys, which very much resemble a game of Tetris. You are closely watching the graphics, wondering if the hands will land on the right keys before the graphics disappear off the screen.

Also, the fact that none of the tune's memorable and iconic lyrics are sung in this cover is not a problem. Since the song is so beloved and near and dear to the hearts of many, as the musician plays the music, you hear all the lyrics in your head and are able to follow along easily.

Covers, a time-honored tradition, are here to stay. Every musician and band performs them at one time or another. One could argue that covers have gotten a resurgence in popularity because of how many are posted on YouTube every day, and that nearly every person who sings on shows like American Idol, The Voice and America’s Got Talent performs a cover.

Some people may not enjoy covers because they rarely live up to the original. I agree that covers seem lazy and are nothing more than carbon copies of the original, which, 95 percent of the time, is infinitely better. So, if you’re going to do a cover, make it good, or at least different from the original version in some discernible way. That is precisely what one person did when they covered a beloved song from the 1970s.

In the YouTube video, the musician plays an instrumental version of “Mamma Mia” on the piano, which is absolutely fantastic. Of course, none of those memorable, catchy lyrics are sung because it is an instrumental, but that does not take away from this performance. As you listen to and watch the video, you’ll have the words going through your head as the hands dance along the keys, creating the iconic tune.

While the sound is excellent and the real draw of this video, there is also an interesting visual aspect present. While listening, you’ll see the falling graphics as they descend toward the keys, closely watching to see if the musician hits the proper key in time.

Her brother and dad play acoustic guitars, and her mom offers some well-timed claps to the lively beat. 

It’s such a fun song to see a family sing together; the whole family does an astounding job. They are very practiced and know how to use each of their skills to sound great together. If you’ve ever seen this song covered, you’ll know that it takes a lot of skill. This may easily be the best cover of this song that you’ll ever see. Everyone, including the young children in the group, knows their parts down to a T. Each of their talents comes together to make a truly impressive piece of music, and they seem to enjoy performing together. When they finished their song, many people whooped and hollered, with lots of clapping. 

The song they chose is an excellent reminder that happiness is a choice. Sometimes it doesn’t matter if other people or things try to burst your bubble—you can choose to stay afloat and not let anything get you down. If you’ve got that happy feeling, stick with it.
 

The Beatles’ ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da’ gets a smooth saxophone makeover by a talented street performer. You’ll instantly be able to recognize this unique song played by the young Avelina Kushnir. Watch the video to hear the joyous tune. 

As the 17-year-old plays, many gather around to watch and video her performance—and it’s easy to see why. It’s rare to see a live sax player and even rarer to hear any Beatles song covered on the sax, especially their song, “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.” The carefree nonsense song is known for its peppy beat with drums, bongos, maracas, piano, and guitar. Even if you’re an avid Beatles fan, you’ve probably never heard this song on the sax. 

Avelina gives the song a whole new life with her saxophone. The tune sounds deeper, simpler, lovelier, and more melodic when she performs it. It captures the song’s playful spirit while adding a jazzy and soulful change that brings a new kind of joy. She’s turned a bustling street into a magic moment. The song feels like a wonderful celebration of youth, love, and joy. 

It’s clear that Avelina clearly enjoys her work as she plays, sways, and dances with her sax. At just 17, she is very confident. She commands her instrument with expertise and ease, making it look terribly easy, even though it must have been very hard to master. When she stops playing, many around her clap with smiles and joy on their faces. 

This young woman’s performance is something that you will carry with you throughout the day. After you see it, you won’t be able to get this happy song out of your head. 

Hearing this is a sweet reminder to slow down and enjoy a happy beat. Music has the power to transform any moment into something very special and unforgettable.

The young musicians in this video are part of the group called The Graystones. All of their members are 11 or 12 years old. They sound incredible together, and it is clear to see their passion for music.

“Billy Joel remains one of the world's greatest song writers and we have admired him since we were young kids. We have already done 2 other Billy Joel songs and this is the 3rd that we learned recently,” shares The Graystones in the caption of their YouTube video. 

The group then went on to share some information about the sound and process of their music video. “We started the cameras rolling last Monday late afternoon and recorded several passes. We all agreed that the 3rd pass we did was the best, and this is the version you're seeing and hearing here. To this, we added background vocals, a keyboard part, and hand claps. You can see all those inserted. We do these songs to honor the artists that brought these to the world. We try our very best to get as close as we can to the original masterpieces. This is why we added those additional sounds mentioned. We hope you enjoy!”

It is wonderful to witness the talent and dedication of these kids, and it is clear why The Graystones have garnered a large fan base online. 

On their YouTube page, The Graystones have shared that they love 70s and 80s music, but also enjoy covering current songs as well. “We go to school, do sports, climb trees, and run around. But music is what we're most passionate about and we work really hard and spend a lot of time every week learning songs and getting better as musicians,” the band shares.
