But hunger isn't just a problem in the developing world. Approximately 1 in 6 Americans experience food insecurity, meaning they go hungry for at least some part of the year. Many efforts are organized through a non-profit Christian organization called The Simple Way -- self-described "ordinary radicals" who have lived in the area for some 15 years. Shane Claiborne, a co-founder of The Simple Way, joined some of his neighbors to share their story of a community in transformation.

Antoinne Murphy is serving a 25-year-to-life sentence for homicide at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. Murphy grew up in a middle class home in Flushing, Queens. At 16, he says he headed down the wrong path and began selling drugs. Since his incarceration Murphy has obtained his bachelor's degree through Mercy College, and earned a Master's of Professional Studies from New York Theological Seminary. Through his studies, Murphy has chosen a path in ministry, "I actually found out who I am now," he says. "And it's all about giving back to the community and I know that, prison doesn't define me".
In October 2011, nurse practitioners Mary Wysochansky and Anna Stinchcum founded and opened the Sumter Faith Clinic — a free clinic to treat the uninsured and underinsured in Americus, Ga., a community Wysochansky says has been particularly hard-hit by the economy. Fueled solely by donations, the facility provides basic health care and spiritual support to Sumter County residents. "The spiritual benefits are wonderful," says patient Regina K. Benson. "They will pray with you. They treat you as a person rather than a number.
